Snow stops play...
The snow, ice and Eurostar service disruptions unfortunately prevented the England teams from travelling to Brussels for an international cross country meeting over the weekend. The teams met at St Pancras Station, ready to board train to Brussels on Saturday - aware that trains had broken down in the Channel Tunnel over night..
The party of four junior women, four junior men, four senior women, four senior men, team managers and some supporters had travelled to London from all over England for the races on Sunday. On arrival at St Pancras it was clear confusion reigned as to whether trains would run - after a while the announcement came that all services had been cancelled. After discussion amongst team managers and travel organisers it was clear that there was no alternative to cancelling the trip and returning home. This was obviously a big disappointment especially among the juniors as some would be too old after the 31st December to qualify. With everyone's safety in mind, the athletes had to return home.
However, three senior women would not accept failure and decided to try and make Brussels by air next day. Having booked flights at their own expense, they tried on sunday morning to fly to Brussels. Again they were thwarted by the conditions as the plane was badly delayed and they did not in fact take off.
The event in Brussels was also to be supported by over 150 Club Athletes and Supporters travelling by coach and ferry from all over the country and none of them made it either, except by a band of runners from Ipswich who got there and competed by sheer force of will! Brussels was also under snow and a major rugby match due to be held there on Saturday was cancelled. Despite all this, the cross country went ahead with small numbers in each race and the organisers counting the cost.
