Antrim International Cross Country – Senior Men’s Race report

England Team:

Adam Hickey
Jonathan Davies
Jack Goodwin

A cold but dry afternoon was the conditions for the Antrim International Cross Country held at Greenwood College on 4th January 2014.

The 5 laps 10k course was generally very good under foot with only small stretches of mud and only 1 hill climb of any note on each lap of the tight and twisting course.

The expected African surge to the front of the field happened as the rest of the field jockeyed for the more minor positions. After 1 lap The England team were showing well with Hickey in 12th, Davies in 16th and Goodwin in about 20th.

Hickey was looking strong and soon moved up to 10th, with Andy Vernon running independently running well in 6th place only being headed by the Africans. There was also improvement for both Davies and Goodwin who were now 14th and 18th respectfully.

The laps continued to unfold with only a few changes happening and most positions staying the same. As the last 2 laps started Davies was entering new territory as this was his first senior race and had not raced as far as 10k before.

Although looking a little tired Davies was showing the character that has made him a top junior and he got himself to 13th and hung on to that over the last lap. Likewise Goodwin was also holding position well and was now-up to 17th despite looking as though he was struggling somewhat with the distance.
As the crossed the line Hickey was 10th, probably his best run of the winter so far, Davies was a highly commendable 13th and Goodwin hung on to 17th in a very good field.
