Antrim International Cross Country – Senior Women’s Race report

The England women did well in a quality field in the senior women’s race which was eventually won by Bahrain’s Mimi Belete in a time of 18:07 as she broke away from two-time world 1500m champion Maryam Jamal also Bahrain and Almanesh Belete of Belgium in the last of the three laps.

Early on there had been a leading pack of seven, this included the British duo of Gemma Steel, Charlotte Purdue and England’s Juliet Potter, however as the pace hotted up Juliet fell back. With the race over 3 laps and being only 5.6km the pace was fast throughout and the other two English Women Rachel Felton and Georgie Bruinvels settled for the chasing group. All three England Women hung in there well to the end with Juliet Potter 8th, Rachel Felton 10th and Georgie Bruinvels 13th at the finish.

Team Manager, Sue Lamb stated that “The England Women had performed well and was happy with their progression this Winter”. Sue went on to thank AthleticsNI for making the arrangements to get the Team to Antrim and the hospitality extended by their Association.
