Race Report: European XC Champs, Albufeira

Aldershot, Farnham & Dist AC Women’s and Men’s Teams travelled to Albufeira, Portugal for the European Clubs Cross Country Championships to represent Great Britain at the Competition.

Mike Neighbour, Chairman of AFD reported:

“Steph Twell led Aldershot, Farnham & District’s runners to third place in the senior women’s race at the European Clubs Cross Country Championships on Sunday and was in contention for an individual medal for much of the six-kilometre race in Portugal. Twell had broken away from the leading group with Kenya’s Irene Cheptai, who was competing for Turkish club Uskudar Belediye, but while Cheptai, a top-ten finisher in the last two World Championships, carried on to victory, the AFD athlete was passed by Bilbao’s Trihas Gebre, who represented Spain in the 10000 metres at last year’s Olympics, and Esma Aydemir, who contested the marathon for Turkey in Rio. Twell’s fourth place was backed up by seventh for Louise Small, fourteenth for Jess Martin and eighteenth for Amy Griffiths. It is interesting to note that AFD were the first club who did not bring in a foreign athlete (allowed within the rule but not the spirit of the competion) we did it with girls who have been with us for years.”

The Team Scores were 1 Turkey 26, 2 Spain 36 and 3 GB (AFD) 43. In the Senior Men’s event a weakened AFD placed 17th with Jonny Hay leading them home in 20th spot.
